We work with educational institutions to embed sustainability into school life through hands-on projects, environmental stewardship programmes, and circular economy initiatives that inspire students, educators, parents, and communities to take action. TM Connect at Tampines Meridian Junior College (TMJC) is an annual platform that brings together organisations working in the social, environmental and youth development sectors. Great to be again part of the 2026 edition! Held in the college hall, the event provided students with the opportunity to learn more about causes they care about and discover meaningful ways to contribute to their communities. Through our booth, we shared how The Circular Classroom works with schools, families and community partners to reduce textile waste, promote circular economy practices and create intergenerational learning experiences through sustainability. Students explored our ongoing projects, learnt about the environmental impact of school uniform waste, and discovered how pre-loved uniforms can be transformed into useful new products. We were encouraged by the enthusiasm and curiosity shown by many students who expressed an interest in getting involved. TM Connects also served as a valuable opportunity for students aged 16–18 to learn about volunteering and Values-in-Action (VIA) opportunities. We look forward to welcoming interested students to support our future programmes, workshops, exhibitions and community outreach activities as sustainability ambassadors and volunteers. A big thank you to TMJC for bringing together organisations and students in a shared commitment to creating positive social and environmental impact.

Applied Learning Programme on Textiles

Changkat Primary School

Great to be back at Changkat Primary School and support the new Primary 6 Applied Learning Programme (ALP), which brought together sustainability, design thinking, coding, and textile upcycling in an authentic learning experience for the entire Primary 6 cohort. Guided by the Ministry of Education’s vision for Applied Learning Programmes, students explored how knowledge and skills learnt in the classroom can be applied to real-world challenges and industries. As part of the programme’s Empathise stage, The Circular Classroom introduced students to the environmental challenges of textile waste and the opportunities created through the circular economy. Across five classes, students discussed sustainability matters with our team, explored the lifecycle of school uniforms, and learnt about the barriers and opportunities involved in promoting textile upcycling within the community. Through these conversations, students developed a deeper understanding of how sustainability challenges affect people and the environment. In collaboration with BERNINA, students will later explore how coding can be used to programme sewing machines to create customised motifs and designs, demonstrating how technology and creativity can support sustainable innovation. The projects will showcase how digital skills can be combined with environmental stewardship to create meaningful solutions. Students will sell their created products during the end of the year social enterprise day. Through this programme, Changkat Primary School empowered young learners to become future-ready changemakers who understand that innovation, coding, and sustainability can work hand in hand to create positive impact.

Engaging an entire school cohort in a meaningful Values-in-Action (VIA) programme is no small feat. Even more remarkable is when every student not only learns about sustainability, but also contributes to a real-world project that benefits the wider community. From February to May 2026, all Secondary 1 students at Victoria School embarked on a hands-on sustainability journey that transformed pre-loved school uniforms into opportunities for learning, creativity and community impact. The Circular Classroom was excited to partner with Victoria School on this unique programme, which introduced students to the Singapore Green Plan, circular economy principles and the importance of reducing textile waste. Using pre-loved school uniforms as a starting point, students gained a deeper understanding of how everyday actions can contribute to a more sustainable future. The programme began with the collection of old uniforms, encouraging students to view discarded materials not as waste, but as valuable resources with the potential for a second life. During the interactive sessions, students explored concepts such as circular economy, waste reduction and responsible consumption. Through guided activities, online tutorials and hands-on exercises, they learned simple fabric-cutting techniques and experienced how materials can be prepared for repurposing. The sessions also focused on experiential learning, combining sustainability education with teamwork, empathy-building and problem-solving through engaging games and challenges. Beyond the cohort-wide activities, a group of student leaders took their learning further by participating in a special intergenerational project with seniors from local Active Ageing Centres (THK Active Ageing Centre Cassia and Kaki Bukit).

Value-in-Action (ViA) Programme

Caring for Others through Sustainable Actions - ViA Programme with Victoria School

Sustainability becomes even more meaningful when it is connected to service and community care. As part of a Values-in-Action (VIA) programme, 60 Secondary 2 students from Victoria School took part in hands-on workshops that combined environmental responsibility with giving back to others. Using pre-loved school uniforms as their primary material, students learnt how discarded textiles can be transformed into useful and attractive products. Through the workshops, they explored the principles of recycling, upcycling and the circular economy while developing practical sewing and design skills. Working in small teams, students were guided through the full production process, including measuring, cutting, ironing, machine sewing and decorative techniques. Together, they designed and produced gift sets comprising coasters and teapot or coffee trivets, which were later prepared as gifts for seniors in the community. Beyond learning technical skills, the programme encouraged students to reflect on the social impact of their work. By creating useful handcrafted items for others, they connected environmental stewardship with kindness, empathy and community service. The activity also strengthened teamwork, creativity and problem-solving as students collaborated to bring their designs to life. The workshops demonstrated that sustainability is about more than reducing waste - it is about creating value from existing resources and using those resources to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Several Sec 2 student leaders furthermor participated in additional workshops with seniors from local Active Ageing Centres.
