Sustainability becomes even more meaningful when it is connected to service and community care. As part of a Values-in-Action (VIA) programme, 60 Secondary 2 students from Victoria School took part in hands-on workshops that combined environmental responsibility with giving back to others. Using pre-loved school uniforms as their primary material, students learnt how discarded textiles can be transformed into useful and attractive products. Through the workshops, they explored the principles of recycling, upcycling and the circular economy while developing practical sewing and design skills. Working in small teams, students were guided through the full production process, including measuring, cutting, ironing, machine sewing and decorative techniques. Together, they designed and produced gift sets comprising coasters and teapot or coffee trivets, which were later prepared as gifts for seniors in the community. Beyond learning technical skills, the programme encouraged students to reflect on the social impact of their work. By creating useful handcrafted items for others, they connected environmental stewardship with kindness, empathy and community service. The activity also strengthened teamwork, creativity and problem-solving as students collaborated to bring their designs to life. The workshops demonstrated that sustainability is about more than reducing waste - it is about creating value from existing resources and using those resources to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Several Sec 2 student leaders furthermor participated in additional workshops with seniors from local Active Ageing Centres.
