Sustainable Consumption in Schools: Insights from nationwide Survey with Parents & Students
Dates 31 Jul 2023 - 29 Nov 2023
The Sustainable Consumption Survey, conducted in partnership with students from Singapore Management University and The Circular Classroom, has now officially concluded. Launched in September 2023, the study explored how everyday habits and consumption patterns among parents and students contribute to Singapore’s broader sustainability ambitions under the SG Green Plan 2030.
At its core, the initiative recognised that sustainability is not only driven by national policies, but by the daily choices made within households and school communities. Parents and students were invited to reflect on their behaviours and share their perspectives on responsible consumption, creating a collective picture of how sustainability is understood and practiced at the grassroots level.
The survey was intentionally designed to be short and accessible, taking less than seven minutes to complete, while ensuring full anonymity. No personal or school-specific data was collected. Instead, the focus was on identifying broader trends and insights that can support community-wide action.
The study has generated valuable insights into awareness levels of sustainable consumption, everyday decision-making habits, and attitudes towards circular practices such as reuse, repair, and repurposing. These findings highlight both encouraging progress and areas where further support, education, and engagement can strengthen sustainable behaviours among families.
Beyond data collection, the initiative played an important role in raising awareness and prompting reflection. It reinforced the idea that small, consistent actions—when multiplied across a community—can contribute meaningfully to Singapore’s transition towards a more circular and zero-waste society.
The insights gathered will inform the next phase of initiatives by The Circular Classroom and its partners, including schools, Parent Support Groups (PSGs), and community organisations. By translating these findings into targeted programmes and collaborative efforts, the project aims to empower families as active contributors to a greener Singapore.
